Home Weather Station

What data the app may use

  • Location: If you grant location access, the app stores your latitude and longitude on your device and sends them to weather providers such as NOAA or Environment and Climate Change Canada when local forecasts, alerts, radar centering, sunrise and sunset timing, or nearby station suggestions are requested. Location permission is optional — you can also enter a ZIP code, address, or coordinates manually in Settings.
  • Weather Underground (personal-station mode): If you choose "Custom Station + API Key" mode, the app sends your selected station ID and your personal Weather Underground API key to api.weather.com (operated by IBM / The Weather Company) to fetch the readings from your station. The API key you provide is stored locally on your device only — it is never transmitted to the developer or to any third party other than Weather Underground itself. Historical readings the app downloads are stored locally on your device in a Room database.
  • Developer-station account data: If you use the optional developer-station access mode, Firebase Authentication and Firebase Realtime Database may process your email address, account ID, access-request status, and related approval metadata. Access requests are invite-only. If a request is denied, we may keep only the minimum request record needed for review, audit, or abuse prevention for a short period before removing it according to our retention rules. A denied request is not an approved account.
  • Analytics: The app includes Firebase Analytics, which may collect app-instance and device-usage information according to Google’s services.
  • Crash diagnostics: The app includes Firebase Crashlytics, which collects anonymized crash reports (device model, Android version, stack trace, and a random installation ID) when the app crashes. Crash reports do not include your location, your Weather Underground API key, or the contents of your weather data. You can opt out of crash collection by disabling background data for the app in your device settings.
  • Weather and map data: Forecasts, alerts, radar, and Canadian forecast-only data use public NOAA, NWS, and Environment and Climate Change Canada data. Canadian weather content is provided under the Environment and Climate Change Canada Data Server End-use Licence. Radar maps also use OpenStreetMap tile data.
  • On-device only: Your tile layout preferences, selected stations, recent weather observations, and forecast cache are stored only on your device and never sent to the developer.

Location choices

Location permission is optional. Users can also enter latitude and longitude manually in Settings instead of granting device-location access.

We do not sell personal data. Personal weather-station and NOAA-only use can still work without a developer account.

Account deletion

If you created an optional developer-station account, you can delete it in the app from the Database settings tab or the access-request screen. If your access request is denied, the related request record may be removed after review according to our retention rules and is not treated as an approved account. For external account deletion instructions, visit the Delete Account page.

Data retention

Weather observations and forecast cache stored on your device are kept until you uninstall the app or clear app storage. Firebase Authentication account records for the optional developer-station mode are kept until you delete your approved account (see Delete Account). Crash diagnostics are retained by Firebase Crashlytics for up to 90 days. Denied access-request records may be removed after review and do not need to be retained indefinitely.
